I cast on for Amy Tozer‘s beautiful Floataway pattern in April. At the time I was set on two modifications: a slimmer fitting silhouette and using my 2 skeins of Malabrigo Silkpaca Lace, a gift from Matt a couple of years ago. Since my yarn was thinner and decidedly less fluffy than the recommended Rowan Kidsilk Haze, I was hesitant to use needles any larger than US 7 so I added an eyelet arrow pattern to keep things airy. Of course my row gauge was also much smaller than the pattern and although I added a full repeat it wasn’t enough to make up for my tight gauge. Then there the business of those delicious summer desserts and cocktails that pushed me from the small size over to the medium…

When I first cast off and tried it on I was pretty convinced I’d only be wearing it as a cowl. Thankfully a good blocking loosened it up a bit. I think that if I add about 4 inches of ribbing to the bottom it’ll be a great length. Then again I’m in no rush - the weather is cooling down nicely and I’m busy enjoying the top in its cowl shape.

I’d like to knit another one, it’s such a great concept and design and I love having non-shawl options for all of the laceweight yarn in my stash. Next time around I’ll try working with a single colour and maybe play around with different stitch patterns - little nupps might be neat! And you can bet I’ll be aiming for the recommended measurements this time around… I’d like to say I’ll also curb the baked goods but who am I kidding. It’s finally fall and I’ve yet to perfect my German apple cake recipe!
