Last year I handspun some of my favourite wools to weave a plaid shawl. But the width of my rigid heddle loom restricted the maximum width to 20" and honestly the finished dimensions were just... weird. Too narrow to wear as a shawl, too itchy to wear tight against my neck (damn you, mohair!). The high contrast and shape reminded me so much of a dishtowel that I only wore it a few times before abandoning it to the scarf bin.
At the beginning of Slow Fashion October I'd vowed to do a little surgery to turn it into a square shawl. Last weekend I finally got started and sewed two sets of 3 straight lines (close together) down the middle and then sliced it in half, with the 3 machine-stitched seams on each side to keep the woven fabric together. Using the (utterly brilliant) ladder-stitch, I then hand-sewed the pieces back together into an almost-square and hand tied a new fridge to the side that didn't have any. This was by far the most time consuming part of the project so I carried it with me everywhere, adding to the fringe whenever I had the chance. So many little pieces of yarn and I'm still fishing them out of my coat pockets! Three days ago I dunked the whole thing in a tub of black Tintex powder for 30 minutes and the colours are now a wonderful combination of grey, teal and chartreuse green. Sadly the old fringe shrunk considerably and I don't have the heart to trim the new fringe to match. Also the lines and colours of the plaid pattern don't match because I didn't weave it with this slicing and dicing in mind...
The itch factor is much more manageable worn loosely as a square shawl and I'm just loving the new shape and colour. It really feels like I have a brand new garment! I'm also pleased as punch to know I'm no longer limited to items the width of the loom. I could weave a throw! Sewing fabric! Honestly I don't know which I'm more excited about... the shawl or the new weaving project possibilities!
